Social Cartography: Mapping Exploratory Walks

Ana Paricio, Barcelona Regional
.
The project’s goal is to create a social cartography to visualize everyday life (including reproductive activities such as domestic and care taking, as well as productive activities). This map represents information gathered by a female exploratory walk done in a Barcelona neighborhood. Some of the topics or categories in discussion are:
  • maintenance
  • accessibility
  • visibility
  • commerce
  • urban elements
  • vegetation
  • community spaces
  • lack of people
  • symbolic spaces
  • space conflict
Each category has an icon and colors that represent the needs (red), good practices (green) and proposed improvements (yellow). Social cartography is a collective construction of knowledge and at the same time an tool of empowerment.
